What Is The Ozone Treatment Process?

Water or air ozone treatment works differently than other chemical treatment designs. Ozone naturally occurs through the introduction of electricity through air, and many people describe smelling ozone in the air during a lightning storm. Ozone can be produced through a similar process on a much smaller scale and then introduced into the air or into water through tiny bubbles. This process is called ozonation. Ozone is a powerful oxidizer and this oxidation process is what makes it so effective as a water purification agent, removing almost all foreign contaminants and molecules. How Does Ozone Treatment Work?

Oxidation

The O3 Oxygen molecule mimics ozone and is an imperative part of Oxidation.

Oxidation occurs when an oxygen atom or an electron from one molecule, like ozone, moves to another molecular structure, attaching to the carbon bonds that form organic compounds and make up pollutants, bacteria, and viruses. A similar process occurs with metals, such as iron and manganese, where ozone combines with the metal to form an oxide. This process occurs very quickly on a molecular level and isn’t noticeable to the eye. Through the oxidation process, however, ozone alters the chemical structure of organic compounds and causes them to break down, thereby eliminating bacteria, viruses, fungi and other organic pollutants from your water supply.

What Does Ozone Treatment Remove From My Water?

Ozone treatment also removes iron, manganese, sulfur and other substances from the water (or air) and creates an oxide, which is then filtered out. Oxides are much more filterable, making the water and air that has been treated with ozone more easily cleaned. Unlike chlorine, which first reacts with water to form hypochlorous acid and then destroys bacteria, ozone destroys organic bonds directly by attaching to them. Ozone also reacts quickly and does not leave residue behind.
